The Courtyard Bridgetown, Barbados has unveiled a $350,000 renovation of its lobby and signature restaurant, Kitchen & Bar, reimagining its public spaces with design elements inspired by the island’s coastal landscape. The project reflects a blend of contemporary design and Caribbean flair, with an emphasis on light, color and comfort.
Originally planned for completion in 2020, the renovation was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Sophia Bryan, director of sales, Courtyard Bridgetown, the updates were driven by the need to modernize and refresh the property. “The need to refresh and upgrade the space for our customers to reflect something more contemporary was the driving force behind the renovation,” she said.
The design draws inspiration from the colors and textures of the Caribbean environment, with a palette of greens, browns, yellows and oranges that evoke the natural beauty of the island. A prominent wall in the lobby features a banana leaf motif, while the front desk is accented with coconut shells—a nod to the coconut palms that are found across Barbados. Faux leather furniture, jute rugs and planters filled with philodendrons complete the tropical aesthetic.
Guests have responded positively to the transformation of the hotel, which is owned by Caribe Hospitality. “Several travelers and locals alike have been very complimentary of the changes made,” Bryan said. “They’ve commented on the brightness and freshness of the space, which has helped make the area feel more spacious.”
She added that repeat guests have appreciated the coziness of the new lobby and the addition of a semi-private space for working or small gatherings.
The renovation also included updates to Kitchen & Bar, the hotel’s on-site restaurant, which now features an enhanced menu celebrating local Bajan cuisine. Signature dishes such as the traditional à la carte Bajan Breakfast, Fishcakes, and Cou-Cou and Saltfish are highlighted on the menu with a Barbados flag, distinguishing them as local specialties. The restaurant also offers themed dining nights and recurring culinary activations, including a weekend breakfast buffet, a weekday executive lunch and a twice-monthly Sunday lunch buffet.
Bryan said that offering a “well-maintained product” is key to remaining competitive in Barbados’ dynamic hospitality market. “Being able to offer thoughtful and functional spaces, carefully designed so that guests can comfortably work, relax and recover, is paramount,” she said.
Looking ahead, the hotel plans additional enhancements, including a refurbished boardroom and new sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact. “Our current focus is on eliminating the use of single-use materials in meetings and events,” Bryan explained. “We’re also sourcing more linen-free furniture for banquets to help reduce water, energy, and cleaning product use.”
